FF2 Media applauds AMPAS (The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) for inviting inviting 774 new members from 57 countries. The class of 2017 has an increased number of women and POC (People of Color) in its effort to boost diversity in each of its seven branches.
Of the 64 directors invited this year, 17 (roughly 27 percent) are women, a decrease from last year’s invitees (54 percent women). This year’s list includes Sharon Maguire (Bridget Jones’s Diary), Susanna White (Nanny McPhee Returns), Aida Begic (Snow), Christine Jeffs (Sunshine Cleaning) and Patricia Cardoso (Real Women Have Curves).
Backlash from the 2016 Oscar snubs sparked FF2 Media’s merit-based Make Oscars Gold campaign, a combination of #OscarsSoWhite (lack of People of Color) and #StopBlueOscar (lack of women). The Challenge? If Oscar wants to be “gold” (meaning merit-based), then everyone must have an equal chance of success.
Given AMPAS president Cheryl Boone Isaacs’ recent inclusion of women filmmakers to the list of Director’s Group and Screenwriter’s Group members, we have every hope that this year’s nominees will be considerably more diverse than in prior years. SO THIS SHOULD CERTAINLY NOT BE CONSIDERED AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF FILM CREDITS FOR ANY SPECIFIC FILMMAKER.
