Recently, the Hollywood Foreign Press released their nominations for this year’s upcoming Golden Globes ceremony. Women artists – especially women artists of color – are snubbed so regularly by these organizations that it’s become expected. And of course, I have my opinions on who was cheated this time around and who did not deserve the nominations they did get (Emily in Paris? Really?). But there did come one welcome surprise this year: Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman (2020) and its four nominations, including for Best Drama Motion Picture and Best Director. Before the buzz around this dark-comedy thriller subsides, and since I’ve been writing so much lately about costume design, I thought I’d talk about its costumes, which play a key role in the film’s storytelling.

Peier "Tracy" Shen is a young writer and director from Wuxi, China, who has been studying, living, and creating films in the United States for a number of years now. As a child she wanted to become a pianist, but this slowly evolved into a passion for writing. During college she realized that film combined many artistic mediums, including music and writing, so over a summer break in Shanghai, she picked up a camera and decided to direct for the first time. Now, she is a graduate from American Film Institute and currently resides in Los Angeles with a number of completed short films under her belt.
Isobel Waller-Bridge is an award-winning composer born on April 23rd 1984 in England, known for her work on Fleabag and Black Mirror.
Lisa Cholodenko is a director and screenwriter based in Los Angeles, who has won numerous awards. Since her debut feature High Art, she has worked on a number of television series and movies including The L Word, Olive Kitteridge, Laurel Canyon, and The Kids Are All Right.
When we look back at the 1980s and 1990s, it seems like Hollywood was a lot more open to having women direct mainstream comedies. Even more so than now.
