Three films written &/or directed by women filmmakers opened in Manhattan theaters this week:
I am happy to report that, with only three to see, I was able to see all of them.
The comedy Booksmart was fun and the Woodstock documentary worked well as nostalgia (“What a long strange trip it’s been!), but my favorite–by far–was Jill Magid’s elegant and intriguing film The Proposal. What is The Proposal? Is The Proposal a documentary? If you had to pick a genre then, sure, documentary… but that hardly describes a film that’s really a meditation on the border between fact and imagination.
Me? I loved it, so my Top Pick for May 24th (drumroll please!) is The Proposal!
