Six films written &/or directed by women filmmakers opened in Manhattan theaters this week:
- Always Be My Maybe
- Free Trip to Egypt
- Renegade Dreamers
- The Spy Behind Home Plate
- Too Late to Die Young
Of these six, so far I have only able to see two: the narrative feature Mouthpiece and the documentary The Spy Behind Home Plate. Truth be told, I wasn’t overly fond of either of them, but of these two, my Top Pick for May 31st (drumroll please!) is Mouthpiece, an inventive–although perhaps too inventive–drama about a young woman trying to cope with the sudden death of her mother.
